What the player needs to know

Medium armor uses Second Skin I and heavy armor uses Second Skin II in the Swordmastery tree. Raise the matching perk to rank 3 to remove its penalty. Launch-build player tests indicate that the warning reduces the armor piece’s displayed protection and bonuses rather than cutting Coen’s total health, stamina and damage by 30 percent. The inventory comparison already appears to show the reduced item values, so an untrained piece can still be an upgrade if its displayed result is better.

What the armor penalty actually lowers

The warning belongs to the armor class, not to a separate character-wide debuff. In repeated launch-week comparisons, players saw no blanket drop to Coen’s health, stamina or damage after equipping an untrained piece. Instead, the item’s own armor value and attached bonuses were already shown at their reduced values, then increased as the matching Second Skin ranks were learned.

That distinction changes the immediate decision. Do not reject a medium or heavy item only because its warning says your stats are reduced. Compare the values shown against the equipped piece. If the replacement still shows a useful gain, it can improve the build before full proficiency; the training would recover more of that item’s potential rather than undoing a hidden 30 percent penalty across the whole character.

Unlock medium and heavy armor proficiency

Both perks sit in Swordmastery and work in either form. Invest at least one point in Vigour to open the branch, then use Second Skin I for medium armor. The current skill record shows three ranks: rank 1 leaves a 20 percent medium penalty, rank 2 leaves 10 percent and the final rank removes the remaining penalty.

Second Skin II continues the branch for heavy armor and follows the same three-rank progression. It requires Second Skin I as its preceding perk. Read the required manual, then learn the available rank at a shrine; reading a book unlocks access but does not spend the skill point or complete the shrine purchase for you.

  • Learn Vigour rank 1 to enter the armor branch.
  • Use Second Skin I for medium armor.
  • Use Second Skin II for heavy armor.
  • Reach rank 3 in the matching perk to remove the penalty.
  • Check both the skill-point and hourglass cost before confirming.

Where to buy Second Skin manuals

PowerPyx lists Second Skin I at the armorers in Maragir and Svartrau City. For Second Skin II, check both Svartrau armorers and the armorer in Tantari. These are specific stores to visit instead of hoping for a random chest or enemy drop; approach shops during their available hours and read the exact Roman numeral before buying.

If the next rank remains unavailable after reading a book, check the named rank in your own inventory and the preceding perk in the tree before spending more time. A manual opens learning access; it does not automatically complete the shrine purchase. The multiple listed shops give you specific places to check without treating a random enemy or chest as a guaranteed source.

When the proficiency investment is worth it

A proficiency rank improves only the matching class, so buy it for equipment you expect to keep rather than because a guide calls heavy armor universally best. Early pieces can gain only a small amount from the restored percentage, while later armor with stronger protection and bonuses gives those same ranks more to recover. The right time depends on the item in front of you and the other skill that the same points and time could buy.

Save before a multi-rank purchase, note the armor piece’s displayed values and compare them after learning. If the improvement does not solve the build problem you expected, reload instead of assuming every red number is caused by proficiency. Item level, upgrades and the bonuses on the replacement remain separate from Second Skin.

Checked September 10, 2026 against the current Second Skin I and II skill records, an independent merchant guide and repeated launch-week player tests. The skill records establish which perk controls each armor class and the remaining penalty after the first two ranks. The player thread supports the inventory-display behavior but is community evidence, not an official formula audit. This site has not reproduced the comparison on its own save, so players should verify the displayed item values before and after spending points.

  • Compare the currently displayed item values first.
  • Choose the perk that matches the armor class you actually wear.
  • Budget manuals, skill points and shrine time together.
  • Recheck the same piece after each learned rank.

Frequently asked questions

Does armor proficiency lower all of Coen’s stats?

Launch-build player comparisons indicate that the penalty applies to the armor piece’s own protection and bonuses, not as a blanket reduction to Coen’s total health, stamina and damage. The inventory appears to show the already-reduced item values.

Which skill removes the medium armor penalty?

Second Skin I in the Swordmastery tree controls medium armor. Raise it to rank 3 for full medium proficiency.

Which skill removes the heavy armor penalty?

Second Skin II controls heavy armor. It follows Second Skin I in the Swordmastery branch and needs rank 3 to remove the matching penalty.

Where can I buy Second Skin manuals?

Check Maragir and Svartrau armorers for Second Skin I. Check both Svartrau armorers and the Tantari armorer for Second Skin II.
