What the player needs to know

Visit Svartrau before Infamy rank 7 and do not save every city quest for the endgame. Rank 4, Notorious, is a useful planning point because it unlocks Where Loyalty Lies and the Manumit route; ranks 4–6 still let you work through city leads before rank 7 makes every soldier recognize Coen. At rank 9, Svartrau’s gates close and city fast travel is disabled, making unfinished street and merchant objectives much more awkward rather than automatically failed.

Svartrau is easiest to explore before every soldier recognizes Coen, so this route uses Infamy ranks instead of an inflexible story-day schedule.

Use Infamy rank, not the calendar, to time the city

Dawnwalker allows quests to be discovered in different orders, so there is no single story day that every build should enter Svartrau. The safer signal is the Court Infamy rank. Visit once ordinary city enemies are manageable, collect local leads and activate useful routes before repeatedly completing Court Activities or killing multiple boyars pushes the rank higher.

Rank 4 is the cleanest pivot for many routes. Reaching Notorious unlocks Where Loyalty Lies, sending Coen back to Sara in Svartrau to continue the Manumit chain. That makes ranks 4–6 a practical city window: the faction content is available, while the universal soldier recognition attached to rank 7 has not started. This is route advice drawn from the system and current player experience, not a hidden quest timer.

  • Enter Svartrau and collect street, cathedral and merchant leads before late Infamy.
  • Reach rank 4 if you want to start Where Loyalty Lies and join the Manumits.
  • Finish errands that require walking city streets or visiting open shops before rank 7.
  • Then return to boyar confrontations and the Court Activities that raise Infamy quickly.

Know what changes at ranks 4, 7 and 9

Edicts stack as Infamy rises. At rank 4, additional soldiers patrol and commanders can recognize Coen. Rank 7 is the major navigation breakpoint because all soldiers recognize him, while headhunters also begin appearing. Rank 8 strengthens soldiers, and rank 9 closes Svartrau’s gates and disables fast travel into or out of the city.

The restriction is cumulative rather than instant at the moment the meter moves. Independent walkthrough reporting says a new Edict is issued after an in-game day passes, with a proclamation cutscene. Check the Court screen after a major activity and use the remaining window deliberately instead of assuming the streets will remain unchanged until the finale.

High Infamy makes Svartrau harder to navigate, but the sources do not establish that reaching rank 7 automatically fails every unfinished city quest. If soldiers already attack on sight, approach objectives from rooftops or side streets, break line of sight instead of fighting every patrol and schedule merchant conversations for a time when the required NPC is present. Rank 5 also reduces the number of people outdoors between dusk and dawn, so nighttime stealth can conflict with a daytime conversation or shop visit.

At rank 9, do not keep testing the closed north and south gates or unavailable city fast-travel points. Current walkthrough evidence documents a rocky approach along the eastern city wall that can be climbed to get back inside. Make a manual save before the approach, enter on foot and complete only the objectives that genuinely need the city before returning to the open world.

Checked September 12, 2026 against two independent current-build Infamy records and three launch-week community discussions asking when to enter Svartrau or warning against leaving its street quests until late. The records agree that rank 7 makes every soldier recognize Coen and rank 9 closes the gates; the community evidence supports the practical early-city recommendation but does not establish a mandatory quest order. This site has not replayed every Svartrau chain at each Infamy rank, so the page does not claim that rank 7 automatically fails quests or that one exact in-game day is optimal for every build.

  • Read the active Edicts in the Court menu before choosing day or night.
  • Avoid patrol chains when the objective only requires talking or looting.
  • Use the east-wall climb if Dreaded Infamy has sealed the gates.
  • Keep a manual save before entering a hostile city for a multi-step quest.

Frequently asked questions

When should I go to Svartrau?

Go before Infamy rank 7. Rank 4 is a useful target if you want the Manumit questline available, leaving ranks 4–6 for city objectives before every soldier recognizes Coen.

Do high Infamy levels fail Svartrau quests?

The current sources show harder access, hostile soldiers and a rank-9 lockdown, not an automatic failure of every city quest. Individual quests can still have their own conditions, so check the journal before assuming a route is safe.

How do I enter Svartrau when the gates are closed?

At Dreaded Infamy, approach the eastern city wall on foot and use the rocky climb to cross into the city. The normal gates and city fast-travel points remain unavailable.
