What the player needs to know

Chariklea is Xanthe’s daughter and the reason for everything Xanthe does. She is mortal, kept alive against her will through dark magic and surgery, with a body assembled from parts taken from other women. You meet her in her room during The Cycle of Love, moments before the boss fight. You only decide her fate if you kill Xanthe: leave her in the mansion until the magic keeping her alive runs out, or end her suffering there. Neither option is reported to change a reward, an ending or a later quest. Sparing Xanthe removes the prompt altogether and leaves Chariklea exactly as you found her.

Coen speaks with a woman beside a fire in an official story scene. Chariklea is met in her own room in Xanthe’s mansion, in a quiet conversation just before the boss fight begins.

Who she is, and why Xanthe does any of it

The game’s own glossary is blunt about her: not many get to decide their own fate, and Chariklea had less of a choice than most. Her mother refuses to let her die. Xanthe uses dark magic to keep her alive even though the girl’s body no longer belongs to her, having been assembled from parts taken from other women. That single line reframes the whole questline. The women Xanthe has been kidnapping and killing were never a vampire feeding at random; they were material.

So Chariklea is not a villain, a boss or a puzzle. She is a mortal kept alive against her will by a mother who, in her immortality, could not let go. You talk to her for a short while in her own room, and then Xanthe bursts in and knocks Coen down to the courtyard where the fight starts. Everything you decide afterwards is decided about her, not with her.

Getting into her room takes lanterns, not a fight

Her room is behind the mansion’s lantern puzzle rather than behind an encounter, which is why some players reach the boss without ever meeting her. The statues want light. Carry lanterns to them in order and the doors open.

It is worth doing even if you already know how the fight goes. The conversation is the only time the game lets her speak for herself, and her room holds a chest that does not care which ending you pick for her.

  • Take the key from the Dog Kennels, which loops you back to the main courtyard.
  • Grab the lantern from the statue on the right, then head up the stairs on the left.
  • Give a lantern to the statue on the stairs, then to the statue just outside the door with the NPC inside.
  • Carry two more lanterns to the pair of statues flanking the final door to open Chariklea’s room.
  • Loot the chest inside for the Vhakhir Treads, reported as lootable whatever you decide later.

The choice only exists if Xanthe dies

This is the part players get wrong, and it is the reason the question gets searched at all. Chariklea’s fate is not a separate decision you make at the end of the quest. It is a follow-up prompt that appears only on the branch where you kill Xanthe. Spare Xanthe and you are never asked, because Xanthe simply carries on keeping her alive.

If you do kill Xanthe, the prompt offers two endings for the girl and nothing else. Leave her and she is alone in the mansion until whatever is sustaining her runs out. End it there and her condition stops. Independent accounts agree that neither choice is tied to an additional reward, and the legendary boots in her room are yours in both cases.

What each Cycle of Love outcome does to Chariklea
Your choiceWhat happens to Chariklea
Spare XantheNo fate prompt appears; she stays alive in the same state, and Xanthe keeps killing to sustain her
Kill Xanthe, then leave CharikleaShe is left alone in the mansion until the magic keeping her alive runs out
Kill Xanthe, then end her sufferingHer condition ends there; no reported reward or story difference

What the guides disagree about

The two most detailed accounts of this quest reach opposite conclusions about Xanthe, and it is worth knowing that before you take either as a rule. PC Gamer argues sparing her is not really worth it, on the grounds that killing her also removes her from the castle fight, leaving the alliance worth little beyond skipping some Blood Guard enemies and a short nightmare sequence. Method argues the opposite, that she turns up to help against Brencis and that this is probably the best outcome overall.

Both describe the same mechanics: spare her and she aids you at Griefberg Castle while continuing to kill women for Chariklea; kill her and you can drain her blood for the Blood Surge ability, with the option to invite her in so she comments on the rest of your run. Which of those you prefer is a judgement about the story you want, not a correct answer the game rewards. What is not in dispute is that Chariklea gains nothing either way.

Checked September 10, 2026 against PC Gamer’s branch account, Method’s Cycle of Love walkthrough and the in-game glossary text reproduced by Gamer Guides. They agree on who she is, on the fate prompt appearing only after Xanthe is killed, and on the two options. They disagree on which Xanthe outcome is better, so that judgement is attributed rather than stated as fact. This site has not replayed the quest, and no claim is made that either fate for Chariklea changes a reward, ending or later quest.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Chariklea in The Blood of Dawnwalker?

Xanthe’s mortal daughter, kept alive against her will through dark magic and surgery, with a body assembled from parts taken from other women. She is why Xanthe has been abducting and killing.

Should I kill Chariklea or leave her?

Neither option is reported to change a reward, an ending or a later quest, so treat it as a story decision. Leaving her means she stays in the mansion until the magic runs out; ending it stops her condition there.

Why does the game never ask me about her?

Because you spared Xanthe. The fate prompt only appears on the branch where Xanthe is killed. If Xanthe lives, she keeps Chariklea alive and the question never comes up.

Do I lose the loot in her room if I choose wrong?

No. The chest in Chariklea’s room holds the Vhakhir Treads and is reported as lootable regardless of what happens to Xanthe or to Chariklea.
